Fildes hits the ground running
LANCASTER City boss Barrie Stimpson gave newest signing Paul Fildes a glowing report after the striker scored again on Tuesday night.
Fildes produced a superb strike from 20 yards into the bottom corner in the 1-1 draw with Barrow at Giant Axe.
And that followed his goal against Peel on Saturday, giving the ex-Kendal man a whirlwind start to his City career.
Stimpson said his main problem was keeping his focus.
He said: "Paul looks sharp and full of life. He has been wanting to do too much work and I have been trying to just get him as a just a centre-forward.
"But two goals in two starts bodes well. It was a great turn and a good strike. against Barrow.
"I want to see players showing confidence. We want players who will go out and express themselves when they come here."
Only a last-minute goal denied City victory over their Furness rivals, who are looking ahead to a season in the Blue Square Premier.
Stimpson said: "Results don't matter but if you lose all your friendlies you go into the season low on confidence.
"Barrow are a very good side. Obviously the finish they put in last season was unbelievable to win promotion.
"There are things to work on but against a better side we have given a good account to ourselves."
The main disappointment for Stimpson was what he considered a low turnout from the home fans.
"There was a good band of ttravelling supporters from Barrow but I was a bit disappointed with our turnout.
"We have got our diehards who will follow us and they are brilliant but if we had got the 150 I expected against Barrow would have brought in some money to the club."
City have a busy week of four games next week starting with Fleetwood on Saturday, Morecambe on Tuesday, Leigh Genesis on Thursday – all at home – and at Kidsgrove next Saturday.
Goalkeeper Mark Thornley will miss all four games due to holiday meaning that Ben Price is likely to get a run.
Stimpson said: "It is a heavy week next week when I am sure I will have to mix and match. But the fitness is good, we have not been found wanting in that department."
Former Lancaster favourites Farrell Kilbane and Colin Potts are likely to be in the Fleetwood squad for Saturday's game.
n THIS weekend could be the final at Giant Axe for physio Wayne Gill as he has accepted a job with Portsmouth academy.
Manager Barrie Stimpson said: "I am delighted for Gilly, I am sure he will do a great job for Portsmouth."
The club are now looking for a physio, possibly a second or third year student, who would be keen to be involved with first team. Call 382238.
