A FATHER and son combination came together to good effect to lift the Guardian Pairs Trophy on Sunday at Slyne-with-Hest Bowling Club.

Steve and Mark Ashburn, from Holme, beat David Rucastle and Peter Wilson 21-14 in the final in what was their first time in the competition.

But
it won't be their last as the Ashburns, who play for Kings Arms, Hale, will defend the cup next year.

Steven said: "It's the first time we have played in the competition because we usually bowl in the Kendal area and in the competitions there.

"But there was nothing scheduled for this week so we decided to enter and we're glad we did.

"Slyne isn't a green we play on often but it is in good condition and is a credit to the club."

Mark said: "We managed to get on a good corner to corner mark across the green and that helped us."

Steve added: "Someone said before that a father and son had never won the competition but we find that our temperaments complements each other well."

The Ashburns came through after a tight opening to their final against Rucastle (Warton) and Wilson (Slyne).

They led 12-11 after 16 ends but then a run of two, two, three and four took them clear to 19-11 and they made no mistake from there.

Mark said: "There was nothing in it early on and as the game went on, the green slowed down a bit which made conditions harder."

In the semi-finals, the Ashburns came through 21-13 against M Martindale and M Holgate while Rucastle and Wilson kept their cool in a tense finish, winning 21-20 against G Webster and F Williamson.

In fact, the Ashburns biggest test was probably in their first game when they beat Keith Lowther and Ray Russell, a well-known and successful pairing.

They led the eventual winners 21-15 but the Ashburns came back to win in a competition that attracted 44 pairs.

Thanks to Alan Swindlehurst for organising the competition and also to Slyne-with-Hest Bowling Club for hosting.
