Phil Thornton top scored for Morecambe
MORECAMBE may have beaten Lancaster in the first of the Twenty20 derbies on Thursday night but they will need a repeat performance a Lune Road next Friday to seal a finals spot.
Morecambe knocked off the 91 runs needed for four wickets but failed to overtake Lancaster's run rate meaning Lancaster will qualify with a win next week.
The game at Woodhill Lane went ahead with no interruptions even though wet weather had never been far away all day.
Morecambe, captained by Tommy Clough, won the toss and they decided to bowl with Lancaster opening with skipper Mike Stevens and Jamie Heywood.
This pair scored at almost a run a ball for the first eight overs with Heywood in particular looking in good nick with several impressive boundaries on both sides of the wicket.
Stevens (17) was first to fall in the ninth over, the first by Morecambe pro Bruce Martin, Lewis Edge showing lightning speed behind the stumps to find Stevens just out of his crease.
Unfortunately for Lancaster, the story from then on was of a failure to build on the solid start given them by their opening pair.
Heywood fell for a good 37, failing to find the gap on the leg boundary and hitting Martin's ball straight to the safe hands of Phil Dennison.
Tim Barry and Michael Walling fell cheaply but a score of three figures still looked on the cards with pro Wasim Khan at the crease.
He hit Clough over the fence for six but Clough got his revenge in the 15th over, diving to catch Khan for 14 off Martin again.
The score of 77-5 soon became 79-6 with Brendan Hetherington giving a return catch to Clough, but the real damage came in the 17th over with the return of Gareth Pedder to the attack.
With his first ball, he had Iain Burstow caught by Mark Lomas then in two identical dismissals, he had Ryan Nelson and Paul Sparrow stumped.
Edge's superb reactions behind the wicket on both occasions highlighted why in many people's eyes, he could make a career from cricket if not football.
And to show they weren't flukes, he took his fourth stumping in the 18th over with Liam Moffat the last to go, Lancaster posting 90 all out.
Morecambe's innings began in a similar fashion to Lancaster's with Phil Thornton and Mark Lomas putting on 51 for the first wicket.
Lomas played the supporting role as Thornton went on the attack, particularly in the seventh over when Walling went for 24, including three sixes.
Pro Khan returned and bowled Thornton for 39 and when Lomas and pro Martin went soon after, Lancaster had hope with Morecambe 61-3 after 12 overs.
Phil Dennison and Vishal Goyal allayed any Morecambe fears before Gareth Pedder hit the winning runs in the 19th over.
Now the focus will be Lune Road next Friday with the winner-takes-all clash for a place in the finals day at Blackpool on Sunday, July 27.
