JACK Senior had little trouble living up to his billing as favourite for the Guardian Trophy on Saturday as he beat the rest of the field by seven shots to claim his third successive win.

Senior had been expected to do well and solid golf throughout the unusually bright day saw him record two 68s to see off the challenge of Morecambe's Tom McCann and David Gartside.

The Heysham 20-year-old confirmed his position as the district's leading golfer and put him on a list of four to have won the Guardian Trophy three or more times.

And as he is unlikely to turn professional just yet, he is aiming to emulate Bob Whiteside by wining four on the bounce next year at Morecambe.

He said: "I would have been disappointed not to have won today but the standard of golf around the area is improving. I just enjoyed the day and it was good to be back playing in the Guardian Trophy.

"Four in a row could be a possibility. I like Morecambe but I know there will be a few lads there who will be gunning me down!"

A good field of 46 showed their support for the event after last year's cancellation. Tony Johnson took on the organising and did an excellent job, supported by several Heysham club members and Morecambe's Mike Carney.

Behind Senior, Morecambe youngsters McCann and Gartside produced consistent golf, as did Lancaster's Daniel Sefton, who was fourth having been second in the Trophy in 2006.

Heysham vice-captain Keith Savage presented the awards at the end of an afternoon which saw some of the best weather for golf all summer with the Heysham course bathed in sunshine.

The day did not start too well for Senior with a birdie at the first but he soon put that out of his mind and at one point threatened his course record of 61.

He said: "It looked on after nine holes. I was one over after four but five birdies on the bounce then let the couple slip, which you can do as conditions weren't great after all the rain we have had.

"This afternoon got off an iffy start again with a three putt on the second from nowhere really. I steadied the ship again with birdies at seven, eight and I just kept it going from there."

Senior is an undoubted talent, claiming various representative honours at county and national level, and is likely to make the step into the professional ranks but he is prepared to bide his time.

He said: "I will have another year or two as an amateur. I am not going to put myself under any stress at the moment, I am just enjoying the game of golf.

"I want to make sure I am happy with what I am doing and that when I turn pro, it is when I am ready."

A raffle, organised by the Peacock family, raised more than £100 for Heysham Golf Club's centenary fund. Thanks also to Dixon Steel Stock of White Lund who contributed to the prize fund.
