BROTHERS Jordan and Lee Sparks were the heroes for Marsh United as they sealed a 2-1 victory over table-toppers Storeys.

On a rare sunny afternoon a large crowd provided a great atmosphere for this top four clash which was sure to provide goals.

But the game started very tentatively with both teams feeling each other out for the best part of the first half.

Due to the lack of movement up front, chances were few and far between and the first 20 minutes consisted of constant long balls aimed to get in behind both defences, although a few teasing runs by the ever-dangerous Lee Sparks provided openings for the Marsh side.

However, it was Storeys who had the best opportunities in the first half including a free header that was just wide from Martin Lewis before half-time.

The second half started at a quicker tempo with both teams playing the ball along the ground rather than through the air.

The deadlock was broken in the 58th minute when Chris Parkes headed Storeys into the lead from a free-kick.

Although the header was good, Marsh player-manager Lee Marshall can't have been happy with his team's marking.

Storeys then made the cardinal sin of sitting back and inviting pressure from their opponents which proved costly when substitute Jordan Sparks, with his first touch, smashed a brilliant strike past Storeys keeper Nuno Rosario to restore parity.

Marsh continued pressing and when Lee Sparks sauntered past two players and shot just wide, the warning signs started flashing for Storeys.

Marsh scored their second in the 75th minute when Storeys keeper Rosario dashed out of his area to clear a ball played over the top.

But he seemed to misjudge the bounce and totally missed his header allowing Lee Fox to direct the ball to Lee Sparks who delivered an acrobatic finish just outside the area over the retreating Rosario to put them 2-1 up.

Storeys never really came back and Marsh had a chance to kill the game off in the 81st minute when Fox burst through and tried to chip an advancing Rosario only for it to balloon over the top, not that it mattered as Marsh held on to claim the three points

Marsh United: Dawson, Farmer (J Sparks 69), Parkinson, Jackson, Hetherington, Marshall, Fox, Pedder, Moffat, L Sparks, Coulton.

Storeys: Rosario, Gammon, Eccles, Hoyle, Parkes, Turner (Hobbs 70), Sanderson, Hough, Stirzaker, Lewis (Creed 70), Hargreaves. Unused subs: Miller.

Man of the match: Lee Marshall – organised his defence brilliantly throughout the game.

ELSEWHERE in the Premier Division, third-placed Carnforth Rangers had a comfortable 4-0 win over Slyne-with-Hest (LCC). thanks to a Alec Gorton hat-trick and one from Byron Nixon.

Caton United are going through a terrible patch have conceded 17 goals in their last two league games.

Against Ingleton, they trailed at half-time 3-1 but by full-time they were 9-2 down!

Darren Green and Jimmy Oliver scored for Caton but Ingleton racked up the goals through John Platten, Phil Eccleston (2), a Teddy Harrison free-kick, Curtis Wood, Jack Bland, Chris Bibby (2) and substitute Tommy Murray.

The best game of the day in the division was between TIC Dynamos and the much improved Galgate side.

There was not much between the two teams and only a Brian Lennon goal in the 70th minute found the net.

Morecambe Royals' problem this season is being inconsistent. Against Torrisholme Fc, next to bottom in the league, they were second best for long periods but managed a 2-2 draw.

In the Sam Price Memorial Cup second round, Swarthmoor put up a great performance but were denied by a Highgrove side that played well.

Goals by Carl Pickles and Luke Ogley set up a game against either Storeys or Slyne-with-Hest (LCC).
